Weekend Highlights

1.) Savings at the grocery store always make me giddy. This week’s bill went from:

With the store savings and a coupon I had! Almost 40% off the bill – woohoo!

2.) On Saturday, I got a manicure/pedicure with a new-to-me color that I am LOVING. The place I go to has a great deal for $35 for both, and I love for my nails to look good! The color is OPI Pamplona Purple and it is a little lighter than it looks in the photo below.

3.) It rained for a lot of Saturday night/all day yesterday, so I got to use my new clear bubble umbrella for the first time this weekend, and it really is the best. It makes the rain way less dreadful, and keeps both me and my purse both dry! It’s kind of crazy how much I didn’t mind going out in the rain yesterday because of it.

4.) I got two awesome workouts on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday I did a 5.25 mile run outside in about 50 minutes, and then I biked the same distance back home. On Sunday, I did 45 mins of hill walking on the treadmill (3.8 mph with incline up to 10.0) and then a full body strength training workout. I’ve started LOVING powerwalking on an incline as cross-training, and it burns almost as many calories as running does (~400 in the 45 mins)!

5.) One night out and one night in – my ideal weekend. Friday night I was exhausted so I came home, cleaned my whole apartment and then laid down on the couch and watched Submarine on Netflix. It was a quirky independent film that was quite entertaining and funny, and I’d recommend it if you’re looking for something new to watch. Saturday night I went out for dinner and drinks with some friends, and it was a blast. Perfect combo!

6.) And the most exciting highlight from the weekend – I got a NEW BIKE!!

photo 2 (31)

I have a hybrid bike that I got just about two years ago, but I really wanted to get a road bike and have been thinking about it for quite some time. On Saturday I went to a vintage bike market to see what they had, and my eyes were immediately draw to this bike. I rode it around the parking lot and was surprised at how different it feels from my hybrid – leaning forward to grab the handle bars feels SO awkward at first! It’s definitely going to take some getting used to, but I am SO excited to own a bike I love so much!

And that’s all I got!

Share a highlight from your weekend!

I love that you saw the silver lining of this crappy weather as an excuse to try out your new umbrella! I used it as an excuse to clean.
Congrats on the new bike! I still feel so awkward (and just big) on a road bike, and ride my mountain bike everywhere. I want to get a cross bike so I can go a little faster. I had an awesome, fancy road bike that I sold on Craigslist a year ago because it just scared me to ride it. 🙁

Yeah I was definitely really scared biking home from the market where I got it. I haven’t taken it out since because of the rain, but I’d like to give it another go this week. Once I get more comfortable on it I plan to start using it to bike to work!

Out of curiosity, what model of heart rate monitor is that?

Thanks! I’ve been wanting to get one for a while because I’m never sure how much I’m actually exerting myself when I exercise. I want to know that I’m really making it count!

Love the new bike! Looking forward to seeing how having a road bike differs from your hybrid (I want to eventually make that switch eventually).

Where do you get your nails done? Color Nails on 17th? I’m always looking for a deal on nails 🙂 Also, what is the vintage bike store called?

Hi Kris! I go to P&L Nails on 18th street – I have had bad experiences at Color Nails! I also love Revo Nails up in Mt. Pleasant – they have a deal that is $25 for a mani/pedi! But I have to drive instead of walk, so I usually do P&L. The vintage bike place is actually in Courthouse in conjunction with the farmer’s market and flea market on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s right across the street from the CVS, and it’s every Sat + Sunday from 9 – 5ish!

Hi Beth – thanks for answering. Sorry to hear you have had bad experiences at Color Nails. I used to go there all the time, but I haven’t really been since they moved. I went two weeks ago and the quality had really gone down. I will have to check out P&L Nails and Revo. I never go to Courthouse because (1) it’s in Virginia and (2) the Dupont farmer’s market is so good, it’s hard to justify schlepping allllllll the way to Virginiaaaaa on the weekend when Metro is doing track work. However, the bike shop and flea market sound cool – maybe I’ll make the trip one day!

It’s so funny – I lived in VA for 5 years and never thought it was THAT far, but now I NEVER go across the water unless absolutely necessary. If you’re on the market for a new bike, I’d highly recommend making the trek over there, but just for that. I totally agree about the farmer’s market – I think I might go this Sunday. I haven’t been in ages!

I go every Sunday! In fact, for Lent I was a locavore – harder than it sounds, especially in February! I’m not Catholic, but I wanted to challenge myself to literally put my money where my mouth is. Eating local embodies a lot of my values – supporting my local economy, minimizing my carbon footprint, eating whole (real!) foods, cooking, building trust with the people who grow my food, not supporting industrial agriculture and the poisonous effect they are having on our environment (and our waistlines and arteries!)… I could go on but for the sake of your readers, I’ll stop here. Let’s just say I learned a lot throughout the process. If you ever need tips (such as who sells the best apples or whatever) let me know. You have to try the Greek YoLite yogurt from Blue Ridge Dairy – it’s life changing! My coworkers now pay me to buy yogurt for them every week =)

I just got a new bike for Easter! But mine is a hybrid. I was so excited because I haven’t had a bike of my own since my first one with streamers! (My birthday is in December and I never thought to ask for one until summer and then in summer my parents would tell me to ask for one for my birthday and round and round.) It’s been fun riding around and I’m going to use it in a sprint triathlon in June!

So exciting to get a new bike, isn’t it!? How awesome that you’re doing a sprint tri in June – that’s so soon! Mine is a sprint tri too, and it’s in August. I’m SO nervous though!

That bike is super cute too! I got a cute new pink leather purse and the same lulu shorts you were talking about last week, got to go to my favorite Mexican restaurant, and went to a wonderful wedding shower…busy, but great weekend!

Love the bike! Such great colors. Best part of my weekend was a super sweaty run on Saturday (it was gorgeous and my first really warm run of the spring!) and Thai takeout and baking oatmeal cookies on Sunday night with the hubs 🙂

I love that nail color! May have to get a pedi with it for vacation coming up…

My weekend highlight – I ran my first 5k! 😉
