SodaStream Home Soda Maker

I get offered a lot of different products to review on here, but I only like to use my blog for things I really love (like my Tofu Xpress) and that I would buy whether it was sent to me for free or not. Sometimes that is hard for me because as you probably know, I LOVE free stuff, but my new tiny apartment can only hold so much!

Today, I have an amazing product to share with you that it was VERY easy to make room for: The SodaStream Home Soda Maker.

SodaStream 002

It’s actually something I’ve had on my list to get for a while because my parents and sisters all have one and it’s pretty awesome. It basically makes soda water out of tap water and is very compact, easy to use, and economical over the long-term if you drink a lot of seltzer!

So when I was offered a free one in exchange for a review on my blog, I happily obliged. They retail around $99.95, which is kind of a lot for a kitchen tool, but I LOVE bubbly water, and with this I’ll never buy a bottle of seltzer again. So I feel like, over time, it’ll pay for itself.

I had no idea they would send me so many flavors of the soda…

SodaStream 003

Definitely more than I need!

The set-up could NOT be any simpler.

SodaStream 008

Step One: Take Everything out of the Box.

SodaStream 010

Step Two: Remove the cap from the carbonating bottle.

SodaStream 012

Step Three: Place the capless carbonating bottle into the top part of the SodaStream.

SodaStream 013

Step Four: Place the top part of the soda stream back into the bottom, with the carbonator attached.

SodaStream 014

That’s it!

SodaStream 016

Making the bubbly water is even easier. They give you two reusable bottles with the SodaStream, so you fill it up just to the “fill line” with tap water (or Brita). Place it in the fridge until chilled (if desired).

SodaStream 025

To fizzify the water, just remove the cap and screw it into the soda stream.

SodaStream 026

Once it’s attached, you’re literally 5 seconds away from soda water.

SodaStream 027

Press the button on top of the SodaStream.

SodaStream 028

And that’s it! You can press it twice for standard bubbly water, more if you want it more bubbly, or just once if you want a slight fizz.

To make flavored soda, you just take whatever flavor you want.

SodaStream 029

Take one capful of the soda mix.

SodaStream 030

And then pour it into the filled, fizzed, bottle of water and you’re finished!

SodaStream 032

I seriously LOVE the SodaStream and have already used it several times since moving in less than two weeks ago! I usually keep both bottles filled in the fridge, one with regular seltzer and one with flavored soda (this one is diet grapefruit). Once I run out of the soda mixes they sent me, I’ll probably just stick with the regular seltzer and add lemon, lime, or citrus to it if I’m craving some flavor. Soda water feels so fancy to me to have at home and to be able to offer to guests – love, love love!

So tell me – which do you prefer – fizzy or flat water?

I definitely should invest in a Soda Stream. Being able to make my own seltzer would get me drinking a lot more water.

I prefer flat water but every once in a while I love to have sparkling water — but maybe if I had all of those flavors I would like sparkling water more?

This has been on my list for at least a year. I drink carbonated water to get out of the habit of drinking soda and it definitely helps with that! The cost sucks but I truly hate the waste, even though I recycle. I gave up buying bottled water years ago and now I’m back to it, just buying carbonated bottled water! This would help so much with the waste.

I’ve been toying with the idea of buying this for awhile. We tried it at a demo in Bed, Bath, & Beyond and it was really cool. I just don’t know how often I would use it, as I only like fizzy water once in awhile and I’m super picky about the flavors. So I’m on the fence, but it doesn’t look like it could be any easier than this!! Very cool you got one.

Hi Beth. OOOH….lucky you! Thanks so much for the great review. I’d have a tough time justifying $99, but then, when I think how much we spend on Perrier and fizzy water in our place, it doesn’t really seem that bad. I’m absolutely going to look into getting one. Or maybe I’ll ask Santa for one! 🙂 Have a great day.

Fizzy for sure! I love soda water, it was a God send when I decided to quit Diet Coke and Pepsi. I should really look at investing in one of these.

I’ve been contemplating getting a Soda Stream for SO long now! I go through several bottles of store-bought seltzer water each week & constantly feel bad about how much garbage I’m sending to the landfill. It’s weird because I never drank fizzy water until I went to London on business – they always offer you “still or sparkling” when you walk into a meeting (well, coffee too). There’s been no turning back since then. And I honestly prefer “plain” seltzer to any of the flavored stuff.

I much prefer flat water. I rarely drink soda, but when I do I disturb my friends by opening my sodas and letting them flatten before I drink them. I don’t like the way fizz burns my throat. Nevertheless, I do find myself looking at those SodaStreams in the store because I think it would be so cool to create your own soda flavors!

I got the same soda stream unit for Christmas last year, and it was the best gift I received! Not only is it great to have fizzy water always on hand. We do not use as much disposable/needs to be returned bottles and cans! Really cuts down on the clutter! I found I loved the flavours at first, but I usually just put a little lime in my water now. Or if I am feeling really out there, a shot of sugar-free davinci syrups! Many flavours, and they don’t expire like the soda stream flavours…

I am SO addicted to my Soda Stream that I actually have one at home and one at my office! I probably drink 5+ liters of sparkling water a day, and I prefer soda stream to any bottled on the market! I have completely cut out all diet sodas and “indulging” in sparkling water has also helped me curb my wine cravings in the evening which saves me a TON of calories. I couldn’t live without mine and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves sparkling water!

Ok, a question more than a comment. Is it hard to clean the bottles in between? Can you make it in a glass if you’re going to drink it right away?

    Thanks!

    Hey, Beth:

We have had this machine for about 5 years and love it. No electricity needed, and it’s so convenient.

When we first bought it, we used to have to order the cannisters online which was a little costly because of the postage and a hassle to return the empty cartridges by UPS. But recently, our local Bed, Bath and Beyond started carrying the cartridges along with all the flavor bottles.

I’m amazed that as much as we use it, it still works like a charm. I love carbonated water, but no longer have to buy it at the store. It’s convenient and really quenches my thirst!

While I’m not one to covet things, I’ve been coveting a SodaStream for about a year. It’s fun knowing it’s a tool that’s useful to you, that you got free. 🙂

For standard daily hydrating, I’m all in for straight-up water. With dinner, I love seltzer (don’t drink soda, diet or otherwise, anymore).

I have a soda stream, and my fiance and I use it ALL THE TIME! We go through at least both bottles every day, since I work from home and usually drink one bottle on my own during the day. We are in Bed Bath & Beyond almost every month getting a new C02 cartridge, but I’d much rather do that than lug cans of seltzer home from the grocery store every week.

I LOVE my Sodastream, probably one of my favorite purchases of the year! I prefer to just add a lemon or lime wedge as you plan to do, and sometimes I’ll mix half selzter and half Passion Fruit Tazo tea that I chill in the fridge and that is also a great zero calorie combo!

I love my Soda Stream, BUT!
–I measured the capacity of the sample bottles, which are supposed to make a quart (liter) each, and they contain about 60 ml each.
This means 15 ml per 8 ounce cup; however, the full bottles are stated to contain 500 ml, enough for fifty 8-ounce servings (10 ml syrup each).
My curiosity piqued, I checked the capacity of the ‘measuring’ cap.
Again, 15 ml to the bottom line, 30 to the 1/2 liter line and 60 ml to the full liter.
Using the cap would make 33.333 servings per bottle, vs the stated 50 servings.
FYI–still a good deal, but not nearly as good as Soda club’s wacky math.
I will be using a REAL measuring device from now on. . .

    beth,
I know I am late with this comment but I had to post, my hubby gave me a soda stream for Valentines Day. Who needs roses when I can get a soda stream? ha ha. He was getting concerned about all the diet coke I drank and thought this would be better for me. Thanks for the instructions on how to set it up. I am going to make some tonight with dinner. I got the idea from your review so soda stream did good by sending you a unit to review because now they got a sale from us.
