On the Outs

Technology and I are currently experiencing a really rocky part in our relationship. Right now, I am using a Blackberry Pearl for a phone… do you even remember those? As I mentioned in the Five Don’ts of Bike Commuting, my former phone fell out of my pocket on my first day commuting to work on bike and straight into a puddle. Apparently your pants’ pocket isn’t the ideal place to store your phone while riding a bike.

I am eligible for my upgrade with Verizon this coming Wednesday, so I decided to just suck it up for the month or so with the old Blackberry Pearl I had from several years ago. It works fine, but it won’t even let me take and store photos because it says the memory is full, and it’s kind of embarrassing to use because it looks so ancient. The only good thing is that getting the iPhone 4s (!!!) is going to feel even more like a dream after getting reacquainted with the Pearl.

So there’s that.

But then to top it off, this past weekend, I managed to break both my camera AND my laptop. My camera was in my purse and apparently it got turned while flopping around in there, and the lens got stuck out and now the camera won’t turn on because of a “lens error”. I’m going to just wait it out until I get the iPhone because I heard the camera is pretty sweet on there, and I’m not in a financial position to get both an iPhone and a new camera right now.

Before the camera broke, I did manage to upload all the pictures onto my computer, before that decided to die too. And of course, I selected “Delete from Card after uploading” for the first time in ages, so the pictures are no longer on the memory card and I am unable to get them off my computer. That would be fine if I had already written about the Cheesy Butternut Squash Bake OR had shared the pictures from all my friends who were visiting this past weekend, but alas, I did not.

I’m in the process of reformatting the hard drive, so hopefully I will be able to get the computer usable again, but in any case everything on there is gone – pictures, music, videos, etc. Guess it’s true when they say you should back your stuff up.

So, clearly, technology and I are on the outs right now. Hopefully that starts looking up later this week. Fingers crossed for Wednesday!

What type of phone do you currently have? Love it, like it, hate it?

I have an old phone–it’s a pinky-red Motorola that you flip open. I’m in desperate need of a new one because this one doesn’t last for any length of time and is quite cranky.

My phone is so cranky too. It gets this hourglass on it sometimes that will just flip up and down for a long time, and I have to take the battery out to reset it or else it won’t do anything. I think it’ll help me to appreciate the new phone a million times more, at least!

They are really expensive, but I get the two-year new agreement price, plus a $30 credit on Wednesday, so I think it’ll be about $170, which is a lot, but it’ll be a phone/camera/ipod, so it’s not SO bad!

Yeah, I tend to collect technology devices (digital camera, dvd camcorder, netbook, kindle…) the iphone would probably handle all of those things in one! But I do love my droid, although I bought it last year and it’s 3G, I’m kind of wishing I had 4G capability because it just came to my area. Maybe I’ll upgrade for Christmas!

Technology and I get into fights on the regular. I am currently sporting a 3-year-old blackberry curve. It is SUCH a trooper- but I could not be more excited for my upgrade over Christmas to the iphone!

Sorry to hear about your technology woes. I’ve also dealt with a camera that had a lens error, and after some googling, I found that the best solution is to take it and smack the bottom of the camera really hard against your hand. It may take a couple tries, but it works.

That’s terrible everything decided to go on you at once. For your computer, I highly recommend Arlington Virginia Computer Repair http://arlingtonvacomputerrepair.com/. The owner runs it out of his house. He provides free estimates and when my laptop died a couple of years ago he was able to recover everything on there that I wanted (pictures, music, files, internet bookmarks, etc) for a really reasonable price and very quickly. I think the turnaround time was less than a week. So if reformatting your hard drive doesn’t work, and you still want to retrieve stuff from your laptop, I would recommend checking them out.

Also, after you get it check out the website “Sh!t Siri says” and then have fun asking her all of those things. Siri is so fun.

My husband and I both have iPhones. We love them! We had Blackberry Storms before we switched over. (Prior to that I had the Pearl so I get it) When he was home on R&R he had to use his Blackberry Storm and he said he felt like he had regressed. You’ll love the iPhone!

I feel your pain about the computer. I know to back up and yet I didn’t on my home computer and there was an issue so I lost a chunk of stuff. I highly recommend a small external hard drive or even a flash drive to back stuff up. I know hindsight is 20/20.

As a high school photography teacher, I have seen “lens error” many times. Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10, it means that the lens is broken and will need to be repaired. It’s not worth it though- it generally costs at least half as much as you paid for the camera (or more!) to fix. If you’re looking for a great point-and-shoot that isn’t pricey, I can definitely give you some recommendations!
But, if you’re getting the iPhone 4s, you’ll probably have quality that is just as good as a compact digital camera.
Keep us updated on how much you love your iPhone… I have a Droid 2 and am eligible for an upgrade… I want the 4S, but keep holding out for that iPhone 5….

I loathe cell phones. We have a Droid phone that’s on a pay as you go plan and no one has the number. No one needs 24/7 access to me and everyone I know are talkers with no point to the conversation. If I’m not home it means I’m living my life and don’t want to be disturbed. I get that makes me ancient in my views but its how the Mr and I roll. 🙂

Holy smokes Beth, when the technology breakdown rains, it pours. Grrr. I feel your pain. I have a fairly new but REALLY annoying Samsung phone that I got as an “upgrade”. It keeps turning itself off and on in my purse, and when I need it, the battery is drained. My husband isn’t working right now, but when he gets a new job, and I know where we stand financially, I’ll probably get an iphone. Have a good week.

It’s almost Wednesday now, so this might not do you that much good, but did you know that Verizon will let you upgrade about a month before you are due for an upgrade at no charge? I found that out the last time I got a new phone. I currently have a crappy Droid (also a puddle accident), but will be upgrading (early!) to a iPhone4S in January. I had my phone in my pocket as well before it ended up in a puddle. Girl pockets are definitely not made for phones!

I have a brand spanking new iphone4s! Its my first iphone and I love love love it! My wonderful husband even sweetened the deal by buying me a brand spanking new ipad 2! Which I used to read the whole blog this weekend! I love the siri thing I tell her to set alarms set timers, she even helped show me how to transfer my contacts into my new phone! Verizon has always been great about allowing me to upgrade a few days/weeks early in the past, however they are sticklers about all things apple!

I have a super-old Blackberry Bold for work. Everyone else seems to have upgraded to iPhones but I’m having trouble justifying one for my current job. My husband’s getting an iPhone 4S as his new work phone tomorrow and he’s NOT an Apple fan, so that should be an interesting experience.

Personally, we both use HTC Desires. I would like a better quality camera but otherwise I think it’s a fantastic phone.

That sounds like three items of bad luck so hopefully your technology problems are over now!

I got the DroidX back in December and hated it. I had so many technical issues with it such as shutting off randomly, freezing, keyboard errors. I got the iPhone 4 a few months ago and love it so far! Everything is very easy to use. To me it seems like they tried to go too fancy with the Droid and the basic functions you need a phone for just dont work as well as with the iPhone. You’ll love it!
