October: New Month, New Goals

Hi guys! This weekend was a chilly and rainy one here in DC, but you know what? I loved it!! I’m so ready for cool weather, boots, scarves, sweaters, sweating less, squash, Halloween, apple cider, and everything else that fall brings. Bring it on October!

September Goals

So goal-wise, September was pretty much a fail on several fronts. I’m not making excuses, but I just had an extremely busy month with moving, traveling for work a lot, adjusting to living alone, etc. That said, let’s take a look at the goals I set for the month.

1.) Focus on my long runs, working up from my current longest run ever of 14 miles all the way to 18. Fail. I did work up to 16 miles, on the treadmill no less, but I didn’t make it to 18. More on that tomorrow.

2.) Focus on cross training 1-2 times a week. Fail. I did start commuting to work on bike a few days a week, but that’s only 1.3 miles each way so it doesn’t exactly qualify as cross-training.

3.) Start scoping out gyms to join. That I did! I’ve been looking into gyms to join and am planning on doing so this week.

4.) Unpack ALL of the boxes within one week of moving in. Check! I had all of my boxes unpacked within 24 hours of moving in! Thank God my parents came and helped me get settled.

5.) Maintain my weight throughout the month. Fail. I am up a few pounds, and am back to 29 pts+ a day and trying to get back to my goal weight, yet again. It’s nothing major, but about 4-5 pounds.

6.) Embrace my downtime. I think I’ve done a really good job with this one. I was initially a little worried about adjusting to living alone and wasn’t sure I’d love having so many nights to myself, but truth be told, I am LOVING it. It’s so nice to do what I want, when I want, and just stay in and go to bed early anytime I feel like it. I also have been reading a good amount, and am about half way through the last book in the Hunger Games series. So good!

October Goals

October should be quite a bit less hectic for me than September was. For one, I’ve already moved which is obviously really stressful, and I am only traveling once this month – to Chicago the third weekend in October for Weight Watchers Leader Training!! I’m obviously really excited about that trip, but also grateful to be able to relax a bit this month!

1.) Get back to my goal weight. I know what to do to get there, just have to do it.

2.) Join a gym. I’m heavily leaning towards Washington Sports Club, but am having a little trouble justifying the expense to myself. I know it’s worth it though.

3.) With that, take at least one spin class. I’ve never taken spinning in my life but have heard such great things. I can’t wait to give it a go!

4.) Organize a reader/blogger get together. I’ve gotten several requests to do a meet-up in DC, and this finally feels like a good month to do it! Just something low key like dinner, happy hour, coffee, fro yo (in October? Why not!), etc. Email me if you want to join at bethsjourneyblog@gmail.com and please don’t hesitate to suggest something if you have a good idea for something fun to do!

5.) Make the most out of Weight Watchers Leader Training (it’s called BLS – basic leadership skills). I’ve heard the training is AWESOME, and so I’m excited not just because it means I can start leading meetings, but because I think it’ll be great leadership/public speaking training in general. I’m excited!

What are you looking forward to most about October?

WSC is awesome!! When I lived in D.C that’s the gym i belonged to. I’m not sure if the meembership still worsk this way, but i was able to use the NYSC whenever I went to visit my parents. If L.A Fitness has made it’s way to D.C I highly recommend it too. They have clubs all over the country which makes it easy for when you travel. I joined when I moved to AZ and then kept my membership once I moved to GA. Their rates are pretty descent. I pay 25 a month (b/c i joined 5 years ago) and the new clubs are super nice.

Hi Cristina! They have a few different memberships – passport (all access), regional (all gyms in your area) or one location… I’m leaning towards doing just the one location because it’s 59/month v. $74. I know that’s not THAT much but it makes me cringe a little bit!

YIKES! That is super expensive 🙁 15 dollars doesn’t seem like that much if you are buying a shirt, but a 15 dollar monthly difference for a gym membership would make me cringe as well.
I miss living in the D.C area so much, but when I hear things like that I realize that I dont’ miss the cost of living.

    Hi Beth,

I’m anxious to hear what you think of spinning. I have been thinking about taking a class as well but just haven’t gotten the nerve to go yet.

I have a feeling I’m going to love it. I feel like it’s easy to do what I’m told exercise-wise, and it’ll push me harder than I push myself normally!

Count me in for that meet-up! We have a cute pottery-painting shop here that I thought looked fun – that could be a change-up from the norm? 🙂

Definitely give the spin-class a go if you find a good one – it’s a fun challenge!

I’m in for the meetup. I have a personal issue with WSC but it’s not a bad gym (stay away from 2 evil trainers though!). Since I mostly run outside I cheaped out and signed up for Planet Fitness as my rainy day backup.

    Yay for October!

I would highly prefer to do a cheapo gym, but there are none that close to me, so I know it makes more sense for me to spend a little bit more money so that I’ll actually go!

Spinning is a great workout! I did it a lot prior to marathon training and can’t wait to do it again once the race is over. I’ve been really bad about cross training while marathon training. A DC blogger/reader meetup sounds like fun (I count myself more as a reader than blogger) – it would be nice to meet other bloggers/readers in the area!

Do you subscribe to Rue La La? I just noticed that today’s DC deal is a $24 one-month membership to WSC!

I’m not sure how close you live to me, but I belong to the gym at the JCC at 16th and Q. It’s about the same price as the gym chains with the discount they give for living in the neighborhood, but I like it because it is directly across the street from my apartment! Just another option in your new neighborhood.

Long time reader, first time commenter. I looooooooove spinning! Just remember, don’t judge it by your first class (or even your first two or three classes). You may get annoyed at the transition changes and your bum is most definitely going to hurt after. But you build up a tolerance for the seat and it never hurts again. Hope you enjoy!

One of my goals for this month is to join a gym as well! In fact, I have it in my head to go during my free time this coming Friday. The gym is also having a promotion on personal training, so if the price is right I might take them up on that, too. In my whole time on Weight Watchers (one year this Saturday!), I’ve been working out at home using various cardio/strength DVDs, but I think I’ve hit a rut. That, and I think I could use a little more structure, which is what I hope the gym/a trainer could give me.

Hopefully we’ll both be a success this month!

It’s absolutely nuts! A year ago I remember being so unhappy with myself, my health, and the way I looked…and while I’m not yet at goal (oh, those pesky 15-20 pounds!), I’ve made quite a stride! My hope is that a gym routine will kickstart the rest of my weight loss, or at least help it along more. Can’t hurt, right?

Although you did not meet a few goals, I would not put the word ‘fail’ in front of a sentence that says you worked up to 16 miles. That is something really incredible! Good luck w/ goals for October. I have been struggling with training and weight gain and I think if I sat down and wrote out a few goals, that would be a big help! Thanks for the motivation!

Good point. 16 miles is nothing to sneeze at!

I do find that writing the goals out does generally make me feel more accountable. Plus, months fly by SO QUICK it’s easy to let them slip away without getting much accomplished.

    a few thoughts:
    1) spinning – DO IT.
    2) stop being so hard on yourself. Moving is a big deal!
    3) does your employer offer health benefits by subsidizing gym memberships? Many do.. Ask your HR person if you have any group discounts at local gyms. I belong to XSport in Chicago and I know there may be a few in the DC area. It’s a great value in my opinion, but things might be different in DC… Maybe I’ll drag you to a spin class when you’re here later this month 😉

If you can swing it financially, I say join the best gym you can. Especially if it’s most convenient for you. I go to a pricey gym IMO, but it is so worth it. It’s less crowded, less meatheads, experienced trainers/instructors, and the locker room amenities are awesome! It’s worth it!

Go spinning! I love it, especially with a great instructor who pushes you to your limit. I’ve never worked so hard at exercise before than in a spin class. Be sure to go early and get properly fitted for the bike. And if you love it, invest in some cycling shoes, makes all the difference!

Good luck on your Oct. Goals!
