Five Friday Firsts

Happy Friday! This week presented quite a few firsts for me, some for the first time ever, and some for first time in a looong time. Here goes.

This week was…

The first time (ever?) I’ve tracked every single thing I ate ALL week.

When I first started Weight Watchers, I used to have a free day/night/meal and would just assume I’d used up all my extra points (and I’m SURE I did!) and try to stick to my daily points for the rest of the week. This past week, I tracked everything, down to the few vodka sodas I had, grilled cheese and fries out at a bar with friends, and the quesadilla and cajun fries I split with another friend (also over the weekend). I ended up being 13 PointsPlus in the red, meaning I not only used ALL my 49 weekly points, but also the 34 activity points that I earned, and then 13 more… Yowza.

The first time I’ve actually lost weight in a LONG time.

I guess there’s something to be said for tracking what you eat (you know, the whole premise behind Weight Watchers) even if you’re not on your best behavior. So, even though I ate more than my allotted points by 13, I ended up losing 2.6 pounds this week! I am SO happy. I’m still 6 pounds over my goal weight, but 2.6 pounds less than I was last week!

The first time I’ve ever worked out over lunch.

Yesterday, I took a 12:15pm spinning class and it was an awesome middle of the day pick-me-up! I have never worked out during lunch before, and logistically it was definitely a bit challenging. The spinning class was a tough one and had me dripping sweat (and burning 444 calories according to my Polar HRM), so showering/blow drying my hair/getting back to work was really tough to do in my hour lunch break. I definitely don’t think it’s something I can do every day or even every week, but every once in a while it’s a nice change!

The first time I’ve gotten in a morning workout in months.

Wednesday morning, I ran 4.6 miles in 45 minutes (on the treadmill – it was POURING!) and it felt SO GOOD to have my workout done first thing in the morning, despite the fact that running was not the original reason I was at the gym at 6:50 am (see below).

The first time I’ve gotten on the list for BodyPump.

On Tuesday morning just before 7:30am, I called to get on the list for Wednesday morning’s 7am BodyPump class. Despite the fact that the list opened up at 5:30am, I was number 30 on the list calling less than two hours later! Miraculously, I actually woke up and got the gym despite the pouring rain, and when I checked in at the front desk, the class was canceled!! I was SO mad because I’ve been trying to make it to BodyPump for what feels like months now, but I tried to make the best of it and ran for 45 minutes instead (see above). I called yesterday morning to get on tomorrow’s 10:15am BodyPump class and was number 18, so fingers crossed that tomorrow marks the first time I actually TAKE a BodyPump class!

Did you have any firsts this week?

This is the first time we’ve done Supreme 90 as our exercise for the whole week. Let’s just say the heating pad is my best friend right now. 🙂

I can’t say I’ve had any firsts this week, but I am back to working out during my lunch break. I really love the mid day workout. Congratulations on your weight loss! That’s fantastic!

No firsts, but I do the same thing as you on my “off” days. I should probably try tracking on that day just to see what happens! (15 pounds down!)

I think tracking and seeing just how in the red I was actually really helped me, because it made me realize just how much I had eaten and was extra motivation to stay on track from Sunday on!

YAY, Beth! You know what it takes to make things happen and I know you will be right back at goal soon. Also – what a bummer on the Pump class. I would have been pissed!

I was totally pissed, but at least it made me get my butt to the gym before work!

Mannny moons ago (when you could only track points in those weekly paper books), a friend of mine was faithfully writing down her points for EVERYTHING. By chance, her husband picked up the book and started reading through her log. He got to about day 3 when he finally exclaimed, “Rebecca! This isn’t a basketball game! The goal is not to score as many points as possible! You could donate your extra points to starving kids in China!” Just about everyone in the room cracked up, but her example stuck with me: even if I’m swimming in the red, I write it down. Good on you for doing the same and congratulations on seeing that scale move downwards!

hahahahaha. Oh man! I would have been SO mad at my husband (figuratively speaking since I don’t have one). It’s so true though!

Yay for the return of the morning workout! And lunch workouts are fun- but I agree, they can be stressful to try and get it all done! My friend and I would usually end up only doing 2.5 miles or something in order for me to get back to my building and look presentable before lunch was over…

Funny, this week has been the first that I’ve used my lunch for exercise too! I’ve never wanted to do that before, but I needed to find a way to fit my walk in. Over the course of the past year, I have walked 3 miles, 5 days per week, but the walking got sidetracked as I began to run more to train for a half-marathon. But, even though I had weekly long runs, other runs weren’t for a solid hour and plus, I needed rest days. For awhile, I walked home each day, but then it got dark. I couldn’t run mornings AND walk to work, so I stopped walking 5 days per week and… I stopped losing weight, even with the running. Whenever I walk for an hour at least 5 days per week, I lose. So this week, I got over my aversion to mid-day exercise, and walked 4/5 days! I’m going to stick with it.

I’ve been going to Body Pump for over 18 months. LOVE IT! I’ve never had any muscle tone or strength before. Now you can actually see my biceps! That’s a shame it’s such a hard process for you to get into the class. I just have to make sure I show up at least 15 minutes before the class starts (unless it’s a 6:15 am class, where it’s relatively empty 🙂 ).

This week was the first time I’ve ever made a lasagna and I made a healthy version too. My family loved it. Yeah!
I’ve been wanting to try Body Pump for a while now too. I got permission from my surgeon to try it after the 1st of the year, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to do it.

I don’t think I’ve ever legitimately tracked every single bite- I just usually add an extra point or two onto something else sometimes- but I always round up. I really should have a week where I track EVERY SINGLE THING and am honest about it- good or bad!

That’s CRAZY about Bodypump!! We don’t have a list for sign-ups at my gym- we only do that for spin classes. I really hope you get to try it out very soon!! December usually seems to be a slow month for gyms, so hopefully you’ll get your chance before the crazy New Years resolution crowd takes over.

    Congrats on the weight loss!

I can’t believe there’s a signup for body pump. The Gold’s in Arlington have BP at a bajillion different times so there’s always open space. I hope you enjoyed it 🙂
