DC Resident

So it’s official – I am a DC resident!!!! This morning I even got to walk to work and it took just about 20 minutes. It was so nice to clear my head and get some fresh air on the way to work, and being able to walk is just amazing.

The move itself went as smoothly as could be imagined, with the movers arriving right on time at 9am on Friday the 2nd, and they were done moving all my things into the new place before noon. Luckily my parents decided to come down to help me because there was so much to be done and my mom and dad are really good at cleaning, building things, and decorating. I’m so so appreciative they came down because there is no way I’d be even close to as settled as I am if it weren’t for them. I promise to do a full apartment tour soon, but for now, I’ll show you a few pics of the new place.

Here’s a shot of the living area:

SmallBuffet 032

That couch I got at Ikea for such a great deal! It’s the Klippan Sofa, and they had the sofa itself in the “As Is” section for half price. The frame normally costs $350, but since it didn’t have a cover on it and was slightly marked up because of that, they marked it down to $175. I got a new slip cover for $150, so the couch looks/is a brand new couch for just $325. Score!

Across from the couch is the Ikea Expedit TV Stand, which the previous tenant left for me for free!

SmallBuffet 034

It’s so nice because it’s perfect for my TV, but also has tons of shelves for books and decorations. Plus, that table cloth in the lower right hand side of the above photo I got at Target, and I absolutely love! The place is really really coming together and it feels so good. =)

I also did my first shopping trip on foot this weekend with the help of this little guy:

SmallBuffet 023

A granny cart! Also from Ikea, on sale for $15.99. It made carrying back all the groceries a complete breeze and it actually holds a LOT of stuff. There also happens to be a Whole Foods less than a 10 minute walk from the new apartment, so that doesn’t hurt either. For less than $40:

SmallBuffet 028

    • Asian Pears (on sale $1/each)
    • Babybel light cheese (on sale $2.50)
    • 2 lemons
    • Organic low-fat cottage cheese
    • Tofu x2
    • Zucchini x2
    • Grape Tomatoes (On sale for $2)
    • Mango
    • Bananas
    • Free Range Eggs
    • Wasa Crisps
    • Sesame Oil
    • Coconut Milk Creamer
    • Skim Milk
    • Arugula

I got a new-to-me kind of tofu, which was on sale for 2/$5:

SmallBuffet 029

Nasoya Lite Firm Tofu. The whole block has just 6 pts+, literally half that of regular tofu!

So all that said, healthy living during a move is HARD. I haven’t eaten a home cooked meal since last Wednesday night, and haven’t run since last Tuesday. A week! I missed my long run, plus all the shorter runs, and though moving is a workout in itself for sure, I really need to get back to it so that I don’t let this marathon slip away from me after all the hard work I’ve done so far.

I have tofu pressing so that I can make dinner when I get home for the first time in the new place, and am planning on mapping out some running routes from my new apartment today so I have no more excuses. It’s going to be a little bit of a challenge not having a gym membership for the time being (trying to save $$ to offset the costs of the move), but I know I can do it. I just need to refocus.

When is the last time that you moved? Where did you move to/from?

Welcome to the DMV. I have been in Maryland since I was 5. My dad was in the army so all the moving we did was early on.

Oh, I love moving! I moved last year, and I’m itching to move again (in the meantime, I just rearrange my furniture often!) My parents are always a big help.

I love the print over your sofa!

The last time I moved was from my parents’ house to Jason’s house – the move was only 2-3 miles away so it wasn’t too bad taking smaller loads, but it was still a ton of work!

    Good deal on the couch!

Your apt looks adorable! I can’t wait to come visit 😉

But the granny cart might negate our friendship, sorry.

    Congrats on getting settled!

And you’ll love having that cart! I should really get one, but just use the excuse to make several small trips instead so I can just carry one or two bags at a time (it’s about a half mile for me).

How exciting for you Beth! Setting up a new place is really refreshing in some ways! New beginnings! I envy the walking commute too! Running in the city is kick ass too 🙂 Enjoy your new hood!

Congrats on the big move! I love the Dupont area 🙂 And your apartment looks really nice already. I have one of those carts because I typically walk to the Whole Foods in Arlington but I’ve only used it once though it’s super handy.

I love Naysoya Lite Tofu. I always stock up on it at WF when it’s on sale because I’ve yet to find it at another local grocery store!

Congrats on your new place, it looks great! How cool that the previous owners left that entertainment center! I would love to be able to walk, groceries, etc. Alas I am in total suburbia. I stayed in Dupont Circle on my one and only trip to DC and I thought it was such a cute area.

I’ve moved so many times (I think I’ve counted 27 different addresses since I left for college). I’m older than you, but that’s still a lot. The last move was almost 4 years ago, which might be a record for me being in one place. I have a bit of wanderlust LOL

Welcome to the District- we’re closeby! 🙂 (!!!!). Aside from breakfast, it’s been so long since I’ve cooked, as well. We’re actually waiting on all of our furniture (PODS) and are living off of what could fit in my car for the next 10 days (was originally supposed to be only 5, ugh). Ha, so, it could get interesting!

Luckily I’ve kept my running in tact for the most part (ahem, aside from an 18-miler that wasn’t). Otherwise, I’d be totally losing my mind by now!

The new digs look so cute! What a great piece of furniture to get for FREE – gotta love IKEA.

I LOVE your place Beth! You decorated your space fantastically! I would definitely want a Granny cart as well (although yours has a pretty pattern.. so I wouldn’t call it Granny-like!)

I just moved last week, and purchased the same exact couch! Except, I paid full price… couldn’t find one in the clearance section.

Your place looks great though! Love the decorations.

Last time I moved was 2-1/2 years ago. We bought a house that was two doors down from the house we were renting. I thought it would be a breeze because of the closeness, and any way you look at it, moving is moving. You still have to pack up everything, move it, and unpack everything. Oh well, we are planning on staying in this house for at least 10-15 more years, so no moving for me! 🙂

What a cute place! I love your living room.

My last move was over 2 years ago when I gave up my amazing apartment to live with my boyfriend in his house. Don’t regret it at all. 🙂

    Congrats on the move!

My last moved was from Brooklyn to my current place in Jersey City. However I must say my most memorable moved was from dc to Brooklyn. It was quite an interesting ride. I was glad to be moving to NYC but I was sad to leave behind my large apt in maryland.

Hi Beth. YAY!!!! Glad the move went well, it looks like a lovely place! And BIG bonus walking to work!!!! I haven’t moved for a few years, and my husband is making rumblings about needing more space and moving. As much as I HATE moving, he may be right, so time will tell when we’ll move next. Have a great Tuesday.

I have seriously moved every year for the past 4 years… I’ve got to stop, lol…. but not until I leave my current place. I really would love to move to Pentagon City or into the District. We shall see.

Love the pics! Your new place looks so cute. Moving is the worst, but it’s so great when you can get settled!
SO jealous about the Ikea furniture – we wanted the Expedit, but our TV was like 1/2 inch too big 🙁 We got another, bigger piece with more room for storage, but I still am jealous and secretly want yours.
    Have fun getting settled!

I am a frequent reader of your blog and although this is my first time commenting I’d like to say how much I really do enjoy reading about your experiences. I am a huge fan of weight watchers and it’s great to see someone who truly embraces the plan and how great it is. I especially love all of the tasty recipes you post! Keep them coming! 🙂

Anyway, I am moving in a couple of weeks and was throwing around the idea of hiring movers, do you mind if I ask how your experience with them was? Did you hire them to move everything in your apartment or just the furniture?

I have used the Light Firm tofu many times for making breakfast scrambles. The texture is perfect, just make sure you really drain it will! (It also freezes well!)

Glad your move went so smoothly. I always dread the process, but maybe that’s because I’ve moved so often ever since beginning college. I’d say I’ve moved at least once every 1 – 1 1/2 years, with my last move being this past March/April. I see one last move in the near future and hopefully that will be it for a LOOOONNNNNGGGG time! Enjoy your new surroundings. Having so many things in walking distance sounds great! Love how you set your room up. 🙂

Congrats on the move! You must be so relieved that it’s over. I can’t believe you have art on the walls already – rockstar! I hate moving, the last time I did it was when I moved in with my husband (then fiance) three years ago. We don’t plan on budging for quite awhile!

Congrats on being an official DC resident- your apartment looks cute! My fiance and I really need to go to Ikea soon to get some things but it’s kinda far- Woodbridge or MD, right? I graduated in May and moved back home [DC area]- moving yourself is no fun!
