Packet Pickup and Chef Geoff Tysons

Hi! Hope your weekend is going well so far – mine is! We went to the Health and Fitness Expo to pick up my race packet for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler and it was SO crowded. 15,000 people will be running the race tomorrow, so I guess that’s not too surprising. I bought some new running socks, some gel blocks, and a chaffing stick (no more battle wounds please!) and picked up my bib number, packet, and t-shirt. Surprisingly there was nothing cool in the rack packets except flyers about different upcoming races. I was expecting there to be some cool free stuff since its such a huge race… sad. Take a look at the crowds at the expo:

Other side:

After the expo, we went to Chef Geoff Tysons to have lunch.

Wil was working there, so treated us pretty well. 🙂 He first sent out some stuffed piquillo peppers which had manchego cheese and were marinated in olive oil.

I had one of these peppers. So good. After that we got a bread basket with crusty warm bread. It comes with a white bean dip with olive oil instead of butter or olive oil like most places, which I think is a nice touch.

I had one piece of bread and a little bit of the dip. Very similar to what we had at home last night, but I think I want to try to replicate this at home. They use roasted garlic so its so garlicy and delicious. A tiny amuse bouche was sent out before our main courses arrived:

This was roasted yellow beets with green beans and shallots. It had a light vinaigrette over it and was so fresh and tasty. I loooove beets. The veggie sandwich screamed out to me on the menu so I went with it.

This had grilled zucchini, hummus, feta, arugula, and tomato and came with mixed greens tossed in a champagne vinaigrette.

The veggies on it were so good and the focaccia bread the sandwich came on was really soft and tasty. We also got some sweet potato fries that my mom and I shared:

Mmm I love sweet potato fries! Everything was so good, and we glanced at the dessert menu but were so stuffed we couldn’t order anything. I did get a nonfat cappuccino to end the meal:

Quite a lunch, eh? I’m still feeling full from lunch, but we’re planning on having a light dinner tonight at a Vietnamese restaurant and doing a little shopping beforehand. It’s going to be an early night because my race starts at 7:30am tomorrow so I have to be up pretty early. I’m pretty nervous because being sick has caused me not to run since last Friday! This will be the longest race I’ve ever run, but I did run the full 10 miles two weeks ago today so I know my body can handle the distance.

I’ll check in later!

Hanging in Hampton

Whew! What a day. We left around 1pm to make the should be three-hour drive, but got caught in a TON of traffic. We ended up getting to my boyfriend’s mom house around 4:45, but it felt like so much longer because traffic was so bad and frustrating! Luckily I had a few snacks in the car to ward off the crankiness that otherwise would have definitely hit hard… 😉

A banana

And a 100 calorie pack of Almonds and Walnuts. I also grabbed some dried fruit when we were getting gas with figs, pineapple, mango and papaya and ate about 1/2 the bag. No picture though!

We hung out for a while at the house and then drove around this new section of town and found a cute Italian restaurant called Bensi. It was only 11 days old but seems like a welcome addition to the town (they are really in need of some nice restaurants!). We talked with one of the partners, and they have 20 locations in NJ and this is their first location in VA, but our meal was excellent – especially for an 11 day old restaurant!

They served this to start, which had peppers stuffed with bread crumbs, olive oil, and cheese in the far left, olive oil with salt and pepper in the middle, and sliced cheese to the right. They also served a bread basket, and a bowl of salad family style.

Here was my first plate:

I may have gone back for another serving of salad and bread… or two 😉 But overall this was a great first course. I love it a.) when things are free, b.) things are served family style, and c.) when its delicious! The salad was bottomless so we got another bowl to split between the four of us and it was really fresh and good. For my main course, I went with the grilled salmon.

It came with broccoli and potato of the day (which was smashed potatoes with bacon and cheese and cream) but I asked to sub a baked potato and they did that no problem.  I also asked for extra mango salsa which came with the salmon as it was, and poured one of those two containers over the potato. Mango salsa is one of my favorites, and this one was really fresh and went great with the potato and over the salmon. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc on the side from Chile

Overall a really good meal. We usually cook when we visit with his mom, but they like meat and I don’t like to be too high maintenance so with my new fish-only policy, so I was a little nervous. Luckily, my boyfriend suggested we go out to dinner, so it was easy for me to get what I wanted and not have to seem picky. We’re now drinking a few beers at the hotel (Miller Lite for me) and taking it easy. I checked out the hotel gym and it is REALLY nice, so I’m thinking about paying a visit tomorrow. I don’t want to do anything too crazy because of my 10 miler tomorrow, but maybe do the elliptical for a little and some weights… but we shall see.

(PS: notice two darkish spots on my collar-bone?? I got really bad chaffing from the run today and those two spots are RAW. I had a zip up hoodie on during the run that I unzipped a bit once I warmed up, and I think the zipper must have really irritated my skin. It hurts!! But, that’s the worst of my post run injuries, so I can’t really complain…)

Yay for having internet at the hotel.. didn’t think I’d be able to update tonight! Hope you are having a fabulous Saturday, and I’ll check in tomorrow!

Front Page

Turns out my idea to want to sit out outside for drinks was not a unique one last night 😉

We decided to go to the Front Page in Dupont Circle and the whole patio was packed.

Since I was the first one there, I put our name in and they said it would be an hour wait for a table outside. Since none of my other friends were there yet, I decided to just wait outside and read the Women’s Health magazine I had in my purse while I waited for them. I realized I was getting super hungry and was happy to find this in my purse

So good! I hadn’t tried this flavor before and I really liked it.

Our table was ready but none of my friends had arrived yet and I think the hostess was doubting I actually had any friends coming. ha. I ordered a glass of house red to start

and ended up having 2 more and a vodka soda while we were there. My friend Rachel was the first to arrive, so when she got there we decided to order some food and went with the Mediterranean platter.

Delicious! It had falafel, olives, hummus, babaganoush, tazatziki, and pita. We ordered some extra pita because by the time we were done with the bread there was still a ton of dip left. And, we got a side of fries

Lianne and Jess ended up making it after we were almost done with the food and we stayed for a few hours. Here were are right as we were finishing up at Front Page

Thats me, Jess, Rachel and Lianne. We had such a good time and it had been a while since we were all together. We ended up heading to Lianne’s new apartment afterwards and hung out there for a bit before heading home.

Today I got to sleep in late (~10am) and that felt SO good! On the agenda for today is getting a workout in and then going to get a haircut! I always get so nervous when getting my hair done for some reason, but I reallly need it. It’s also supposed to be 76 and sunny today so I’d like to get some time in outside. Come back later for pictures (new hair and food!) and a step by step Green Monster photo montage. Hope you enjoy your Saturday!
