Breakfast

CSA!

Good morning and happy almost-Friday! Today is off to a great start because I went to pick up my CSA this morning and it looks great this week. In case you didn’t know, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and translates to getting a box of fresh, local produce every week. Farms have a certain number of shares (farm shares) that can be purchased by the public, and this allows them to get their cash flow started early and allows them to get to know the people eating their food. As a consumer, there are tons of benefits because you get seasonal fresh produce, packed with nutrients and you know where you food is coming from. Also, you don’t get to pick what you get (like you do at a Farmer’s Market) so it forces you to try new things that you might not otherwise, which always excites me.

I signed up for the CSA a few months ago and have been looking forward to it starting ever since. I was pretty disappointed when the first week was during my time in OKC, and then last week my friend picked it up for me and it didn’t look THAT good. In fact, we haven’t even used most of the produce we got last week, but today was a new day and a new box of veggies! I set out to pick it up at 9am because its right by my house and I wanted to get first pick of the veggies and also not have them sitting in an unairconditioned room all day (which I suspect was part of the problem from last week) so I set out before work to go find the veggies.

There were tons of boxes stacked up in the room, and so I just picked out the two I was getting (one for me, and one for my friend Amber because we’re splitting a full share). One box is a half-share, and two are a full-share, so Amber and I are splitting a full share. Here’s what the box looked like:

And spread out on my counter…

This week my share had:

  • 3 heads of broccoli
  • collard greens (lots)
  • yellow squash
  • red leaf lettuce
  • a baby cilantro plant
  • beets with tops

I am really happy with this week’s share and am excited to start eating it.. tonight! I’ve never had farm fresh broccoli and I love broccoli, so that’s one of the things I’m looking forward to the most.

Breakfast today was true Overnight Oats (as in I actually made them last night for once!) and added craisins overnight. I got the ideal from Nicole because she put raisins in her overnight oats, so I decided to give it a go with craisins, and it tasted SO good! The craisins/raisins soak up a lot of the liquid so they plump up and add a nice flavor/texture to the mix. The bowl was interesting enough on its own that I didn’t even add any toppings and I’m feeling really satisfied.

In the mix:

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats (1.5 pts)
  • 1/2 scoop protein powder (1 pt)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (.5 pts)
  • 2 tbsp cherry craisins (1 pt)
  • 2/3 cup light soy milk (1 pt)

If you like overnight oats and haven’t ever tried adding raisins or craisins to it, DO IT! It’s so good.

Question: Have you ever done a CSA or is that something you’d be interested in? What was your experience like if you did it, and if not, what would you look forward to the most about it?

Oaty

Morning and happy hump day! It is only Wednesday but I am sooooo ready for the weekend. I am feeling so beat since I’ve just been going, going, going basically since Memorial Day weekend. I was away in Oklahoma City for the first weekend in June, so worked 13 hour days both days, and then this past weekend went to a bachelorette on Saturday and came back Sunday, not getting much sleep either night…

With that, I’m struggling a bit with my healthy lifestyle. I woke up yesterday with the best of intentions and had a healthy breakfast and lunch, and then was planning on working out and cooking dinner. I even got in my workout clothes and was going to go out for a run, but I just couldn’t make myself go. I laid down on the bed but didn’t go to sleep and just lost all motivation to get out and didn’t end up going. I did end up doing some Bikram postures on my own so stretched a bit and got my heart rate up a little, but it was by no means the workout my body was craving.

It’s so easy to let two days turn off into three and then into four, but today it has to stop. I brought my running clothes with me to work and plan to run home from work, which should be about 5 miles.

Breakfast today was hot oats, for the first time in ages! When I was browsing around my kitchen this morning I spotted the Bob’s Red Mill Scottish Oats in my pantry and thought about eating them hot and got excited because I seriously cannot even remember the last time I’ve eaten hot oats since I discovered overnight oats, so today was the day.

I used:

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup scottish oats (2 pts)
  • 2 tbsp egg whites (0 pts)

I’d never used egg whites in oats before, but wanted to add a little natural protein (not protein powder) so decided to give it a go. I boiled the water, then added the oats, then stirred in the egg whites a few minutes later. The oats had to cook for 10 minutes in total, and they turned out really fluffy.

I wanted to dress them up a bit, so I used 1 tbsp unsweetened carob chips (.5 pts) and 1 tbsp unsweetened coconut flakes (.5 pts). I put the oats into the microwave with the carob chips to get them a bit melty, and I put it in for way too long so the oats sort of boiled over the chips and almost exploded. I ended up just mixing the carob into the oats and then putting the coconut on top.

These were really good! I find that when I use protein powder I can taste it in the oats, so I wanted to use something that would add protein but not much flavor. I couldn’t taste the egg whites at all in the oats, so we’ll see how long this bowl of oats keeps me full. I think it definitely made the texture a bit fluffier than normal, so this bowl was pretty awesome.

Questions about oats! Do you like your oats hot, cold, or both? Favorite toppings? Favorite kinds of oats? I like my oats every which way and am sad I went so long without them hot. It’s just so easy making overnight oats (or same day cold oats) that require zero cooking, so its pretty tempting to make them regularly. I love doing nut butter as a topping but have tried to limit the nut butter while I’m trying to lose more weight because it’s pretty pointy, though 1 tsp only has 1 point so maybe I’ll give it a go. I use rolled oats regularly but just got into scottish oats which have a nice creamy texture.

Alive and Well

Hello! Sorry I’ve disappeared yet again for a few days, but I promise I’m alive and well. This weekend was SO fun and incredible, celebrating my best friend’s bachelorette. What happens in AC stays in AC for the most part, but I thought I’d share a few pictures with you!

We all wore LBD (little black dresses) and some got the memo for neon shoes! ūüôā This was us about to get on the elevator to dinner. We went to Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant in the Borgata, which was incredible. Here we all are at the dinner table:

Here’s me with the Bachelorette:

Me rocking my bachelorette pin:

And then at the end of the night at the club.

Photos stop there.

It was soooo much fun and really great to be reunited with all of my college friends. It had been over a year since we were all together… far too long!¬†As far as trying to be healthy on the trip, I sort of let it go because I think it’s important to let go and have fun for certain special¬†occasions, like a bachelorette party for one of your best friends. I ate healthy during the day on the way to Altantic City, having a Egg White flatbread from Dunkin Donuts and plenty of iced coffee. Lunch was a salad from the food court with spinach, mozzarella, avocado, and chickpeas, and then dinner was lots of bread and pasta to have a good base for a night of drinking and fun.

I got back pretty late on Sunday, and then yesterday was at an offsite event for work all day, so I wasn’t by a computer at all to blog and check in. I am back to normal now though, and recommitting myself to hardcore healthiness until the wedding so that I can look and feel my best in my bridesmaid dress. This morning was boring but much needed frozen berry oats:

These had:

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats (1.5 pts)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (.5 pts)
  • 1/2 scoop protein powder (1 pt)
  • 1/2 cup light soy milk (.5 pts)
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries (1 pt)

It’s funny how it can be so refreshing to go back to your normal routine once you have a crazy weekend of traveling and going out. Even though I have this breakfast quite frequently, I was so happy when I was putting it together this morning and even happier when I was eating it. I didn’t bring a lunch today so I’m going to have to run out and get something, but I plan to be back on track with eating, cooking, and exercise, starting today.

Have you ever been to a bachelorette/bachelor party or did you have one if you’re already married? What did you do? ¬†If you’re not yet married, what do you think you’d want to do for it?

Chocolate Banana Frosting

Good morning and TGIF! I am soooo ready for the weekend, just have to get through today! Last night was really fun at the reception, but I didn’t end up doing THAT well with not drinking/healthy eating, though I didn’t bomb it either. It really helps not eating meat because they passed around a bunch of hors¬†d’oeuvre¬†that had meat on them, so I easily passed those up. I had two jumbo cocktail shrimp and two mini crab cakes from the passed appetizers. To drink, I had two glasses of Malbec and two vodka sodas, a bit more than I was intending. After the reception was over, a few of us finished our last drink at the bar and the waitress brought over some cheese and bread. I didn’t snap a picture, but there was some blue cheese, brie cheese, and a semi soft white cheese that I’m not sure what it was. It was all delicious and a nice treat!

This morning I woke up and was craving one thing… pancakes! Chiacakes to be exact. I altered the recipe slightly to make it a little less pointy, and had 3 perfect pancakes with chocolate banana frosting!

Into the batter went:

  • 2 tbsp flax pancake mix (1 pt)
  • 2 tbsp rolled oats (.5 pts)
  • 1/2 scoop protein powder (1 pt)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (.5 pts)
  • 2 tbsp egg whites (0 pts)
  • 1/4 cup light soy milk (.5 pts)

So 3.5 points for 3 pancakes!

Then, to make the frosting, I heated up 1/2 small banana (1 pt) with 2 tbsp soy milk for 30 seconds in the microwave.

The bananas got soft, so I mashed them with a knife and added 1/2 tsp cocoa powder (0 pts). It turned into a thick chocolatey banana frosting. If you wanted it to be thinner, you can add a bit more milk, but I liked it thick! I spread some on each on the chia cakes, and got ready to feast on a delicious breakfast.

Soooooo good. I haven’t had pancakes in a while, so these really hit the spot! This frosting can be used for a lot of things, and it’s just 1 pt for all of it! Yum.¬†So the total breakfast was 4.5 points, and super filling. I want more only because they were so good, not because I’m still hungry.

What are you looking forward to most this weekend? I have a bachelorette tomorrow night in Atlantic City. One of my best friends is getting married in less than two months, so we’re going all out to celebrate!

Frozen Berry Oatmeal

Morning! Today is hoootttttt outside, even before 9am. They are saying its going to get up into the 80s so a walk outdoors at lunch time is going to be completely necessary. Breakfast today wasn’t terribly exciting, but it was delicious. I had cold oats, but this time topped them with frozen Very Cherry Blend from Trader Joe’s. It has cherries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries, and a cup has 90 calories, no fat, and 5 grams of fiber, so 1 pt.

A few people have sent me emails or left comments saying they’d love to try these oats, but never remember to put it together the night before. I actually almost NEVER make these the night before, just the morning of. I used to pack my lunches at night but recently out of pure laziness have started doing it in the mornings. I just add all the ingredients, mix it up, and in the end it sits for about an hour before I eat it from transporting it to work. I use slightly less liquid (the amount below) than if I were to make true overnight oats because there’s less time for the oats to soak up the liquid, but it turns out almost exactly the same if you do it the same day. So, bottom line, you don’t have to plan too far ahead to have these!

I know it doesn’t look that pretty, but it was awesome. The frozen berries were out of the freezer for about an hour so they softened up a bit and added a ton of flavor throughout the bowl.

Into the mix went:

  • 2 tbsp scottish oats (1 pt)
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats (1 pt)
  • 1/2 cup light soy milk (.5 pts)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (1 pt)
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (1 pt)
  • 1 cup frozen Very Cherry Blend (1pt)

One of the highlights of this breakfast for me was I got to eat it with a new spoon!

This picture doesn’t do justice to how cute and tiny this spoon is, but I had been on the hunt for little spoons for months! I first saw them on Kath’s blog, and I love the idea of eating with a tiny utensil because you get more bites. I found a set of 4 of these for 6.99 at HomeGoods.

One of the main struggles that I have with healthy eating is that I tend to inhale my food. I try to be mindful of it and slow myself down when I think about it, but my food is always gone relatively quickly. This spoon actually did help me slow down a bit, but the bowl was still gone pretty quickly.  I think if I ate slower I would eat less and be more successful at getting to my goal weight.

Some tricks I’ve heard about slowing yourself down are:

  1. Put your fork/spoon down between bites
  2. Drink water between bites
  3. Use chopsticks to eat

Do you have any other tips for slowing down? What is the thing you struggle with the most in terms of healthy eating?

Goal Update

Good morning! I am still catching up on getting back into the swing of things after this business trip like woah. I did unpack and go grocery shopping, but I have been soooo exhausted that today I just turned my alarm off and went back to sleep. I never do that! Snooze, yes, but off? No. So I think I need to go to bed extra early tonight so I can get an extra hour of sleep and hopefully wake up easier tomorrow.

Even though I’m not doing that great with my goals (largely from traveling to OKC for 6 days/5 nights), I wanted to do a check in now we are over a week into June. Here is a list of the goals and my progress on each of them.

1.) Drink more water. Half Check. I was drinking a lot of water during the first few days of June and into my trip, but then during the weekend my water consumption was slacking. I started back up again yesterday and have been getting in my 8+ glasses a day yesterday and today, and plan to stick with it.

2.) Be consistent with exercise. Half Check. I worked out twice during my trip, and then went back to Bikram yesterday. My goal is to get in 5 days of exercise a week if possible, but last week I got in only 2-3 because of traveling. I plan to make up for that starting this week and going forward.

3.) Get back to strength training. Check. I did free weights while in OKC for the first time in a while. My goal is strength training once a week, and I plan to do some more tonight since it’s rainy outside and not ideal for a run/bike ride outdoors.

4.) Go back to Weight Watchers Meetings. I’m giving myself until the end of June to get back to meetings so I still have more time on this one.

5.) Limit alcohol consumptionFail. I drank too much during my trip to OKC and have a reception and bachelorette coming up this week. To make up on this goal, my plan is to not drink any alcohol after Saturday night (the bachelorette) until July 4th/my birthday weekend. This should be totally doable. ūüôā

6.) Count WW Points.¬†Half Check. I was counting points before I left for OKC but not during my trip. I’m back to counting today, even though it’s my least favorite thing to do.

Did you set June goals? How are you doing on them so far? It’s not too late!

Breakfast today was nothing exciting but it was delicious.

Vegan Overnight Oats that had:

  • 1/3 cup oats (1.5 pts)
  • 1/2 cup light soy milk (.5 pts)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (1 pt)
  • 1/2 scoop protein powder (1 pt)
  • 1 Raisin Bran Vitatop (1 pt)

I also had an asian pear on the side.

I haven’t had one of these in forever so I was excited when I spotted them at the grocery store yesterday. They are soo good and 0 points! They are kind of a cross between an apple and a pear – sweet but crunchy. I love them!

Have you had any foods lately that you’d forgotten about/haven’t had in a long time?

I’m Baaack

Hello! Sorry for the blogging hiatus, but I’m back and plan to be on regular schedule going forward, blogging after breakfast, lunch and dinner. As I mentioned during my trip in OKC, the powercord for my laptop broke, so my computer died and I had no way of charging it. It made it really tough to blog because typing long entries on my phone was semi-painful, plus having to take all the pictures on my droid instead of on my camera. I basically gave up after Saturday morning, but wanted to share a few highlights of the trip.

First, the frozen yogurt place. It was called Peach Wave, and was SO cute and delicious. Here’s a picture of the inside of the shop:

It was a self-serve frozen yogurt place, and they had 16 flavors of frozen yogurt to choose from!

Plus tons of different toppings, from fresh fruit, nuts and granola

to every kind of candy you could ever want

I went there twice during my trip to OKC. The first time I went the healthy route:

Plain tart yogurt with raspberries, kiwi, mochi, and organic granola. It was sooo good and the fruit was super fresh. The next night (no picture) I went the candy route, and got cookies and cream frozen yogurt with oreos and cookie dough. SO good, but definitely not the healthiest.

Instead of¬†recounting¬†every detail from the last four days, I’m just going to summarize what went right and what I need to work on for my next business trip (one in July and a big one in September coming up).

Good things:

  • I went to the gym 2x and got in great workouts and strength training
  • I ate a lot of fruits and veggies the whole time I was there
  • I ate a healthy breakfast every single day, either egg whites and veggies or oatmeal, plus lots of fresh fruit
  • I ate at the buffet for several meals, and didn’t overdo it ONCE (This one is HUGE for me)
  • I got back on track after indulging on weekend meals yesterday and ate really healthy even though I was traveling/in airports all day. Breakfast at the hotel of egg whites with veggies, skim milk, fresh fruit, and an english muffin. Lunch was at Moe’s and I got the Personal Trainer, which was basically a salad with black beans, veggies, rice, and pico de gallo. I opted out of cheese and the tortilla bowl, but did get chips on the side. Dinner was a Grilled Veggie Wrap and a fruit cup that I bought at the airport and ate on the final leg of my trip.

Better luck next time:

  • I overindulged on dinner for the last three nights of my trip – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Friday night was the crab feast, Saturday we went to Mexican and I had way too many chips and salsa, a margarita, and shrimp fajitas for my meal, and Sunday was the worst. We ate at the hotel bar and ordered chips with blue cheese melted on them, crab mac and cheese, and some other random snacky items – everything was shared but it was way too much and way too unhealthy and I woke up HURTING yesterday)
  • I only went to the gym the first two days – I should have tried to squeeze one more trip in over the weekend to get myself refocused
  • I didn’t drink enough water after the first few days
  • I overpacked (not a huge deal, but my suitcase was really heavy and I only wore 1/2 of what I brought!)
  • I drank too much coffee and now I feel myself craving it again when I hadn’t had it regularly for a few months before this trip
  • I had a few too many drinks on the trip – I’ll leave it at that

I have another major highlight of the trip to share – a trip to an incredible art gallery (and I’m not really into art but this was amazing). I’ll save pictures of that for another post so this one doesn’t get out of control!

Today I am back to the grind. I still have to unpack since I didn’t get home until almost 10 last night, as well as go grocery shopping and just relax a bit so I can get my life back in order. I had an egg white puff breakfast sandwich this morning for breakfast.

I used 1/3 cup egg whites and microwaved them in a bowl for 1 minute. I added a bit of spinach which wilted from the hot eggwhites, and then some sriracha, all on an arnold thin. It was really good but I was hungry a bit later, so I dug into a banana that I bought yesterday for a snack on the plane and didn’t end up eating.

Back to work to sort through my millions of emails and catch up on everything I missed from being out of the office!

I know I’m a day late, but what was the highlight of your weekend? If nothing exciting happened, what are you looking forward to NEXT weekend? I have one of my best friend’s Bachelorettes on Saturday night in Atlantic City! We are staying at the Borgata and will be living it up and I can’t wait. All our best friends from college will be together for the first time in a while.

Crabby

Hiya! Sorry for not coming back yesterday, but blogging from my phone is kind of difficult because it takes so long to type! I had a pretty good day yesterday because some of my coworkers arrived in OKC so I had some friends instead of being on my own. It was a looong day, but a good one. The course wrapped up and went really well, and then I helped with a few other things and took a tour of the hotel where the rest of our conference is going to be held.

For dinner, we decided to go out to a seafood restaurant and it ended up being so fun! They had tons of different kinds of fresh fish, and we ended up getting this feast where we each got steamed snow crab legs, shrimp, corn on the cob, potatoes, and andouille sausage (I gave mine away). They put brown paper down on the table and then dumped the buckets down in the middle. It was so fun!! I love eating with my hands and getting messy (on occasion). Here’s a pick of the feast in the middle of our table

image

The food was delicious! I loooove crab legs and hadn’t had them in so long. Plus the shrimp, corn and potatoes were delicious, too. They boiled everything together so there was also onions and different spices, so everything was super flavorful.

After dinner, we ended up walking around Bricktown a bit more and then stopping for frozen yogurt again. I forgot to take a picture, but I got cookies and cream fro yo and topped it with snickers and cookie dough. Definitely delicious, but not the healthiest. I left feeling really full from dinner and the fro yo, and a little bit sick to my stomach even though everything was good, I just ate too much of it!

This morning started EARLY and my alarm went off at 5:30am (ouch!). There’s a huge exam going on so it’s pretty low key since i”m not actually taking the exam, just have to stand by and make sure everything goes well. I went to the breakfast buffet again and got the same thing I had yesterday – a veggie eggwhite omelet with fresh fruit and skim milk. Having the stabilizing breakfast also helped my stomach feel a bit better even though I woke up at the crack of dawn. Coffee has been flowing as well, as I’m sure you can imagine.

So yesterday felt a bit indulgent with the big dinner + candy covered frozen yogurt, so I’m counting that as my splurge day for the week. I had a healthy breakfast and plan to try to be mindful for the rest of my trip. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to squeeze in another workout, but I’m going to try to get one in either later today or tomorrow. The days are just so busy that its going to be tough.

Hope you all got to sleep later than me and are enjoying your Saturday!! ūüėČ

Ugh. My laptop died last night while I had it plugged in and only then did I realize my charger was not working. It was sad because I had an awesome meal on the roof at a nice restaurant followed by self serve fro yo and took lots of great pics. I loaded them onto my computer and selected delete from device after uploading just befote it died. So this really puts a wrench in my blogging plans for the weekend but ill try to blog from my phone as much as I can because I want to keep you guys posted on how I’m doing with being on track during my business trip.

After the course yesterday I went to the gym again and did arm weights. They only have free weights so I did biceps triceps pushups and some other random things with a weighted ball. I need to learn to do more stuff without instruction or machines. After that I did 40 minutes of intervals on the elliptical, alternating between incline of 4 with 1 resistance and incline of 10 with 8 resistance every 2 minutes. I did 5 minutes cool down for a total of 4.35 miles and 552 calories according to the machine. (I know the calorie count is off but I still like to look at it).

After the workout And shower I went to Nonna’s, a cute restaurant in Bricktown. I got a salad to start which was awesome! It had fried goat cheese on it along with strawberries and sliced radishes but I’m sure you can guess which the star ingredient was for me. For my main course I ordered an appetizer which was out of this world. It had avocado, mango and crab and was stacked Napoleon style in a cylindrical shape. It Wish topped with microgreens for garnish and was served with crostini. Oh my was it good! Avocado plus mango plus crab!? Match made in heaven. I must recreate this at home. I also had a glass of Viogner (white wine) with my meal which was perfect. I actually got to sit upstairs on the outdoor patio and it was a beautiful night so it was a gray experience. I left with a smile on my face.

After dinner I wandered around Bricktown a bit more and went to a frozen yogurt place that just opened over the weekend. It was super cute inside and had 16 flavors from peanut butter to pomegranate to cheesecake to pineapple. There were also toms of toppings and since it was self serve it was fun to put a little bit of everything I wanted on there (and not pay a dollar for each topping!) I ended up being boring and getting original tart flavor, but I topped it with raspberries, kiwi, mochi, and organic granola. It was awesome! I definitely plan to return again before I leave okc.

I just had an early night reading a book (side note – I have not turned on my TV once since I’ve been here!). This morning I went to the breakasr buffet at the hotel and it was really good! They had an omelet to order station, tons of fruit, hot dishes, oatmeal that looked a little funky, bagels and lox, plus cereal and milk. I ended up going with an eggwhite omelet with all the veggies they had – mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and spinach. I asked them to use as little oil as possible and also found out it was a mix of olive and calls oils, so quite healthy. I also loaded my plate up with fruit – pineapple, strawberries and melon, plus had a small cup of skim milk. It was delicious and I feel a lot less cranky than I did yesterday!

Busy day again today but ill be back.

Make me jealous – what are your plans for the weekend? Ill be having a blast working 14+ hour days…

Don’t Be Scurred

Hello! This morning has been INSANE. A lot of random logistical stuff went wrong with the course so I was running around like a crazy person trying to fix everything. Luckily, it all worked out and everything got taken care of, but only after a good amount of panic and stress. They say all is well that ends well though, and it seems to be ending well, so I think we are OK.

Because of the craziness, I didn’t even have time for breakfast. I was planning on ordering room service or going to grab something once I had registration set up for the course, but because of all the issues I ran out of time. Luckily they had some green apples at the gym yesterday and being a lover of all things free, I grabbed one. I had it in my bag and ate it once I realized it was there.

It was not the best apple I’ve ever had – definitely a bit mealy, but you better believe I ate it completely down to the core. I also had two cups of black coffee, and practically tripped over everyone as I raced out of the room for our 12pm lunch break. I just decided to eat at the restaurant in the hotel for lunch, and they had a nice looking buffet for only 12.95. I surveyed what they had and there was a salad bar, baked potatoes, a veggie medley, some meat dishes, and bread pudding for dessert. I started off with two good sized plates. The first had salad with mixed greens, cucumbers, red onions, and tomatoes, as well as some of the veggie medley.

The second plate had a baked potato with some fixin’s.

At buffets, sometimes it can be hard to be healthy because they don’t have things you would normally ask for if you were ordering from a server. But, today I was my own advocate and asked for three things I didn’t see on the buffet.

1.) Salsa – My favorite topping for baked potatoes! All they had was sour cream, cheese, bacon, butter, and chives (all good but not the healthiest) so I just asked the guy behind the buffet if he had some salsa and he gladly got me that dish of it pictured above.

2.) Balsamic Vinegar – All the dressings at the salad bar were creamy and full-fat, so I asked my server for some oil and vinegar and she brought out extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar which was great because I could control the amount of oil and these two are actually my favorite dressing if I use any.

3.) Artichoke Hearts – They had a salad with artichoke hearts, cucumbers, tomatoes, ham, and some vinaigrette, and i piled it high on my plate before realizing there was ham in it. I loooove artichoke hearts and figured they must have them in the back, so I asked the guy behind the salad bar if I could have some plain artichoke hearts and he got me a dish full of them!

Notice though I asked each person for just one extra thing so I didn’t seem ridic – the server and two separate guys behind the buffet. I’m so glad I did because it helped me to have a delicious and satisfying meal while still staying on track. Don’t be scared to ask!

I did go back for Round 2 at the buffet and got a small bowl with more of the veggie medley and a roll.

I realize I didn’t have any protein with this meal really, so I hope it holds me over. I do feel really full right now!

Question: Do you enjoy buffets? Do you feel weird asking for special things since you’re not really being served in the traditional way? I normally tend to avoid buffets because I have a hard time controlling myself around them, but this one was small and only had a few options, so it felt do-able. I’d never really asked for special things before today but it went so well that I wouldn’t hesitate to ask again.
